June’s Story: Campden Earth Angels

A testimonial written by Michelle, the daughter of one of our patients.

“I lost my mother in August 2025 to oesophageal cancer. Her end of life journey was emotional, complex and heartbreaking. Prior to diagnosis, at the age of 89, she was already physically frail, having survived strokes, seizures and a very serious fall. However, armed with her notorious tenacious attitude, she put up a brave fight to the very end of her life’s journey.”

“Her wish was to die at home surrounded by family. When her care package was unexpectedly withdrawn through no fault of her own, I moved into her assisted living apartment to care for her full time, supported by fantastic GPs and district nurses. It was through our GP’s referral that Mum and the family were introduced to Campden Home Nursing.”

“From the first visit, everything changed. Their compassion, professionalism and kindness were extraordinary. These qualities were extended not only to my Mum, but also to me and the rest of the family. The nurses became like family.

They gave me something priceless: the ability to sleep, to step out into the outside world, but most importantly, to become Mum’s daughter once again. Not her nurse. Not her carer.”

“In her final days, the nurses created space for dignity, love and meaningful moments. Some very funny, some very emotional, but ultimately space to celebrate the family… her family. It takes a special kind of person to care for someone at the end of life. What Campden Home Nursing gave us went far beyond medical care. They brought comfort, reassurance and humanity at the time we needed it most. They honoured my mother’s life and allowed her to leave this world with dignity, surrounded by love and the family she adored.”

“Campden Home Nursing has running costs of almost £1 million per year and yet only receives around 1% NHS funding. The charity relies on fundraising, donations and community support. I cannot think of another charity more deserving of support.”

In my mother’s words: “They truly are the Campden Earth Angels.””
