Play Therapy can make a difference
This month, we are sharing how therapeutic play can offer support for a bereaved child. When a child experiences the death of someone close to them, feelings of sadness, anxiety, anger and confusion can be difficult to express in words.
Through play, art and creative activities, children can safely explore their emotions, make sense of their experiences and start to develop healthy ways to cope with grief.
The mother of a 10 year old boy who attended play therapy after the death of his grandad said:
“My 10-year-old son was referred for play therapy at Jecca’s House in Chipping Campden after the death of his beloved grandad. Following his death, my son became increasingly anxious, particularly when family members left home.
This often resulted in emotional outbursts, which were distressing for him and impacted family life. Play therapy gave my son space to process the complexities of grief through play. The warm and welcoming environment, together with the consistency of support, benefited him enormously. He knew he had a safe place to go each week where he could make sense of what had happened and express feelings that were difficult to put into words.”
“I believe play therapy has given him valuable tools and coping strategies that continue to help him when new challenges arise. As a family, we have seen a significant improvement in his wellbeing. We have been able to spend more time together and he has coped with situations that before would have been extremely difficult for him and his younger siblings.”
“While my son was in his sessions, I enjoyed some quiet time at Jecca’s House. Being able to sit with a cup of tea, read a book or simply gather my thoughts was invaluable during a very stressful period.”
“When no other services could offer support, being offered prompt play therapy through Campden Home Nursing at a time of great need was an enormous relief. As a family, we are extremely grateful for the care and support we received.”
